Medicare Special Enrollment Periods

Publish Date

There are certain Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) for Medicare that let your clients make changes to their Medicare Advantage plan and Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Some situations that qualify as a Special Enrollment Period include moving, losing current coverage, and more. Rules about when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes and the type of changes are different for each Special Enrollment Period.

Most common enrollment circumstances:

  • Leaving employer group health insurance coverage
  • Change of address
  • Change in Medicaid status
  • Loss of current coverage
  • Current plan changes its contract with Medicare

You can view a more comprehensive list of these scenarios on the Federal government’s Medicare website.
